Well, few days a ago The Last of Us Part 2 Paid Reviews controversy began after Alanah Pearce shared some insights into the games industry. According to Alanah, game reviewers are corrupt and they are very afraid of public than publishers. In the same vein, Alanah stated that the relationship between Developer, Publisher, and a Reviewer or Site gets badly affected with negative reviews.
“I am on the insight, I only have an insight perspective. Back Before I worked in the game’s industry, I was convinced game reviews were paid off”
She said that Game Reviewers care more about their integrity and reputation, rather than worrying about what information does the reader gets. If they are going to rate a game like The Last of Us Part 2 10/10, they are on the safe side. Consequently, if they talk against the game, The Last of Us fans will defame them and criticize their review. In short, honest game reviews barely exist.
Major websites like IGN, Washington Post, Screen Rant, PushSquare, VG247, and Eurogamer gave the game a mind-blowing “masterpiece” title. On the other hand, some were different and sites like VICE, Polygon, and Kotaku reported the game as “Poor Sequel” and dull.
Alanah also highlighted a good point, that everyone has a different opinion, some will like a chocolate cake, while others won’t. Well, in The Last Of Us Part 2 Case, everyone seems to like the Chocolate Cake, where is the criticism from Game Reviewers? something shady going on?
Well, Users have now stepped up to further acknowledge that “game reviews aren’t honest”. The popular rating site Metacritic had reviewed The Last Of Us Part 2 and gave it a solid 9.5. However, upon the game’s release, users have completely destroyed the ratings.
The User Score (Meaning Score Given by Players) now sits at 3.3, which is remarkably low. This rating is taken from 12,174 players who might not have been biased while playing the game. Let us Highlight some Key User Reviews from Metacritic, Warning Spoilers!
“First off, critics are useless. Nobody should should ever listen to them ever again, they’ve proven to me they are not to be trusted”
“The game play did not evolve one bit since 2013. It’s still a walking simulator that’s more a movie than a game, which would be enjoyable if it had a good story but God damn is it bad. The story simply broke my heart and not in the good way. It’s like a spit in the face of the entire fan base. It’s like the worst fan fiction you could possibly find.”
“It’s not the worst game ever made. But I wouldn’t call it good. While I enjoy the combat even though it’s outdated, the story is what made this games downfall. I will point out just one very big plotpoint now, will not spoil the rest. The way they handled one particular death in this game is bad… and I mean BAD. so you will tell me a person who killed hundreds of guys in the last game… met his end by a golfclub?”
“This franchise is all about the story. Without the story the game means nothing. This game does have great visuals and great gameplay, but the main focus needs to be the story. The story just isn’t good and it tries too hard to make you feel sorry for people that you immediately don’t want to feel sorry for. And the ending tries so hard to make you feel sad, without making any logical sense.”
“Terrible writing, Boring Combat, Very poor representation of LGBTQ+ characters, coupled with completely unrequired violence (Its basically just torture porn for 30 hours straight). Leads to a terrible, boring slog of a “game”.
The only positive I can give this game is that the environments are beautiful and well crafted, big applause to the people that design the world.”
“I wasn’t plan to leave a review until I saw someone gives a 10/10 review says this is the future of the gaming. Are you F kidding me? If this is the future of the gaming I rather not to play any games in the future any more.”
I do not have any agenda against The Last of Us Part 2, but it seems that a 10/10 rating by every other game reviewer was a bit too much. They dragged players into buying a game, that so far has only gotten dull reviews, and brought disappointment.“
Trusting Game Reviews?
To be very honest, we should really stop saying “oh that site gave it a 10, that must be a great game”. Every game reviewer can overrate a pretty bad game, and also degrade a really good game.
The Same Site that Gave The Last Of Us Part 2 a 10/10, gave Mafia 2 a 4/10. Now, Mafia 2 is one of the few games to actually have Overwhelmingly Positive Reviews on Steam. Its reputation across the gaming community is impeccable. Will The Last Of Us Part 2 with its controversial reviews achieve such an authoritative position?
John Teti of Eurogamer in 2011 reported Mafia 2 as “awfulness so well”. He criticized the game on a whole new dimension and gave it a 4/10. I read the review in 2011, and I’ll say sharing your opinion is fine. However, there you must have an open mind and emphasis, rather than just defaming something.
Was John being different? Yes.
Was The Review Honest? No.
Should we take his word Over User Reviews? No.
The point being, that in future we should give User Reviews much importance than Game Reviews. Just, because a top site gave a game 10/10, does not mean, it becomes really great. Until and unless, the true reality through user reviews happen, never go on to buy a game.
